About Roman Eye Beads:
Era: 100 B.C. to 300 A.D.
Origin: Alexandria (modern-day Egypt)
Technique: Core-formed and applied decoration (a method in which molten glass is wrapped around a metal rod coated with a release agent, and other colored glass is applied in polka-dot patterns)
Glass crafted during ancient Roman times or the Sassanian Empire is known as "Roman Glass." Ancient Roman merchants, who were actively engaged in glass trade, created beads in various designs to cater to buyers' preferences.
Among these Roman Glass beads, those with eye-like patterns are called "Eye Beads." These beads, believed to have protective powers against evil, were inspired by ancient Phoenician beads from several hundred years earlier. The fascination of ancient Romans with even older beads highlights the deep, intertwined history of beads and humanity.
