About Dzi Beads (Chonji Beads):

Dzi beads are ancient beads passed down through Tibetan culture. Similar to etched carnelian, they are designed by baking natural dyes into agate, creating intricate patterns. These beads are believed to have been crafted around the 1st to 6th centuries AD. However, the exact composition of the dyes used remains a mystery, making these beads one of the most enigmatic antique beads. While primarily found in Tibet, they are also discovered in regions like Bhutan and Ladakh in the Himalayas. Different baked patterns are thought to hold various meanings, with the round "eye" motif being particularly sought-after for its excellent condition. In Tibet, Dzi beads are considered talismans of wealth and prosperity and are treasured as heirlooms. In recent years, they have gained popularity in China, where they are known as "Tenju." Many replicas using similar techniques are widespread, but ancient Dzi beads remain highly rare and valuable.
