About Dzi Beads (Chongzhi Beads):

Dzi beads are ancient beads from Tibet, similar to etched carnelian, created by baking natural dyes into agate to form patterns. These beads are believed to have been made between the 1st and 6th centuries AD. Despite their age, the specific components of the dyes used remain a mystery, making them one of the more enigmatic antique beads. While primarily found in Tibet, they are also discovered in regions such as Bhutan and Ladakh in the Himalayas. Different patterns, especially those featuring round "eye" motifs, are considered to have various meanings and are highly coveted. In Tibetan culture, these beads are regarded as amulets of wealth and prosperity, cherished and passed down through generations. Recently, their popularity has surged in China, where they are known as "Tianzhu" (Heavenly Beads). While many replicas made using similar techniques are available, genuine ancient Dzi beads remain exceedingly rare and valuable.
