About Dzi Beads (Chonji Dzi Beads):

Dzi beads are ancient beads originating from Tibet. Similar to etched carnelian beads, they are agate beads adorned with patterns using natural dyes that are fired onto the surface. These beads are believed to have been created between the 1st and 6th centuries AD. However, the exact composition of the dyes used remains a mystery, making these antique beads intriguing collectibles. While primarily found in Tibet, they have also been discovered in Bhutan and the Ladakh region of the Himalayas. Different patterns on the beads are believed to hold various meanings, with the round "eye" motifs being particularly prized when in good condition.

In Tibetan culture, Dzi beads are considered talismans of wealth and prosperity, passed down through generations as cherished heirlooms and valued for their ornamental appeal. Recently, their popularity has surged in China, where they are known as "Tianzhu" (heavenly beads). Many replicas made using similar techniques are now widespread, but authentic ancient Dzi beads remain highly sought after and rare.

Note on Dzi Beads and Chonji Dzi Beads:

Among Dzi beads, those with striped patterns rather than "eye" motifs are referred to as Chonji or "Line Beads" (Senju).
