About Dzi Beads (Striped Dzi Beads):
Dzi Beads are ancient beads from Tibet, designed by etching patterns onto agate using natural dyes. Similar to etched carnelian, these beads are believed to have been crafted between the 1st and 6th centuries AD. Though the exact composition of the dyes used in the etching process remains a mystery, these beads are a fascinating subject of historical intrigue. While primarily discovered in Tibet, they have also been found in Bhutan and the Ladakh region of the Himalayas. Different etched patterns are believed to hold various meanings, with beads featuring circular "eye" patterns being particularly prized.
In Tibetan culture, Dzi Beads are considered talismans of wealth and prosperity, passed down through generations and cherished as adornments. Their popularity has surged in China, where they are known as "Tian Zhu" (Heavenly Beads), leading to the creation of many replicas using similar techniques. However, ancient Dzi Beads remain highly coveted and rare.
Note on Dzi Beads and Striped Dzi Beads:
Within the category of Dzi Beads, those with striped patterns rather than "eye" motifs are called Striped Dzi Beads or "Xianzhu" (Line Beads).
