In Africa, these beads are known as "Chachaso." The term "Millefiori" is Italian for "a thousand flowers," referring to the intricate floral patterns created in the glass. After the collapse of exclusive trade with the East and the market dominance of Bohemian glass in Europe, Venice responded by producing decorative glass with a wide range of colors and patterns. Millefiori glass became a hallmark of this period. Traders who were already engaged in bead trade with Africa made cylindrical beads from this glass and transported them to Africa as trade beads.
