About Roman Eye Beads:
Era: 100 BC to 300 AD
Origin: Alexandria (modern-day Egypt)
Technique: Core-wound application (a method where a release agent is applied to a metal rod, molten glass is wound around it, and then other colored glass is applied in polka-dot patterns)
Glass made during the ancient Roman era and the Sassanian Empire is known as "Roman Glass." Ancient Roman merchants, who were active in glass trade, created various bead designs to cater to buyers' tastes.
Among the Roman Glass, beads with eye-like patterns are called Eye Beads. These beads, believed to have protective powers, were a recreation of ancient Phoenician beads used for warding off evil. The Phoenician beads date back several hundred years before the ancient Roman era.
The fact that ancient Romans admired beads from even earlier times shows that the history of beads is indeed intertwined with the history of humanity.
