About Roman Eye Beads:
Era: From 100 BC to 300 AD
Origin: Alexandria (modern-day Egypt)
Technique: Core-wound attachment (a method where a release agent is applied to a metal rod, molten glass is wound around it, and other colored glass is attached in polka dot patterns)
The glass made during ancient Roman times and the Sasanian Empire period is known as "Roman Glass." Ancient Roman merchants, who were avid glass artisans and traders, created various bead designs to suit the preferences of their buyers. Among these, beads with eye-like patterns are called "Eye Beads." These beads are replicas of ancient Phoenician beads, believed to have protective powers and used as talismans. The Phoenician beads date back several hundred years before ancient Rome.
It is fascinating to think that even ancient Romans admired beads from an even earlier era, showcasing the deep and intertwined history of beads and humanity.
