About Roman Eye Beads:
Roman Eye Beads date from between the 1st century BCE and the 3rd century CE. They originate from Alexandria (modern-day Egypt) and are made using a core-winding technique, where melted glass is wrapped around a metal rod coated with a separating material. Other colored glass pieces are then applied in a polka dot pattern.
Glass made during ancient Rome and the Sassanian Empire periods is known as "Roman Glass." Ancient Roman merchants, who were active in glass trading, created various bead designs to cater to buyers' preferences.
Among these, beads with eye-like patterns are called Eye Beads. These were believed to have protective powers and were a recreation of ancient Phoenician beads, which date back several centuries before ancient Rome. It is fascinating to think that ancient Romans admired beads from even older civilizations, showcasing how bead-making history intertwines with human history.
