About Roman Eye Beads:
Period: 100 BCE to 300 CE
Origin: Alexandria (modern-day Egypt)
Technique: Core-wound application (a method in which a release agent is applied to a metal rod, and molten glass is wound around it; additional colored glass is then applied in dot patterns)
Glass produced during ancient Roman times and the Sassanian Empire is known as "Roman Glass." Ancient Roman merchants, who were avid traders of glassware, created a variety of bead designs to cater to the tastes of their buyers.
Among these Roman Glass beads, those with eye-like patterns are known as Eye Beads. These beads, believed to have protective powers, were a reproduction of ancient Phoenician beads, which were considered to have such powers in antiquity. The Phoenician beads predate the Roman era by several centuries.
The fact that ancient Romans admired beads from even more ancient times illustrates that the history of beads is indeed intertwined with the history of humanity.
