About Roman Eye Beads:
Era: 100 BCE to 300 CE
Origin: Alexandria (modern-day Egypt)
Technique: Core-wound application (a method where molten glass is wound around a metal rod coated with a release agent, with additional colored glass applied in a polka-dot pattern)
Glass produced during the ancient Roman era, as well as the Sassanian Persian era, is known as "Roman Glass." Ancient Roman merchants, who were actively engaged in glass trade, created various bead designs to cater to buyers' preferences.
Among Roman Glass, those with eye-like patterns are called Eye Beads. These beads, believed to have protective powers, were recreated by the Romans based on ancient Phoenician beads, which date back several hundred years before the Roman era. The fact that ancient Romans admired even older beads shows that the history of beads is indeed intertwined with the history of humanity.
