About Millefiori Beads:
Era: Late 1800s to early 1900s
Origin: Venice
Technique: Mosaic application method or mosaic inclusions
In Africa, these beads are known as "Chachazoo." The term "Millefiori" is Italian for "a thousand flowers." Following the collapse of exclusive trade with the East and the dominance of Bohemian glass in European markets, Venice faced significant economic challenges. In response, Venetian artisans created a variety of decorative glass, with Millefiori glass being a prime example. Merchants already engaged in bead trade with Africa fashioned these vibrant glass pieces into cylindrical beads, which were then traded in Africa as trade beads.
