Known as "chachaso" in Africa, Millefiori is an Italian term meaning "a thousand flowers." Following the collapse of exclusive trade with the East and the dominance of Bohemian glass in European markets, Venice sought to revive its economy by creating these colorful decorative glass pieces. Millefiori glass became a hallmark of this effort. Traders who had already established bead trade routes with Africa crafted these cylindrical glass beads, which were then transported to Africa as trade beads.
