In Africa, these beads are known as "Chacha So." The term "Millefiori" means "a thousand flowers" in Italian. After the collapse of their exclusive trade with the East and the market dominance of Bohemian glass in Europe, Venice sought to revitalize its trade economy by creating highly decorative glass items, among which Millefiori glass is notable. Traders, who were already engaged in bead trade with Africa, crafted cylindrical glass beads from these Millefiori pieces and transported them to Africa as trade beads.
