About Millefiori:
Era: Late 1800s to early 1900s
Origin: Venice
Technique: Mosaic application or Mosaic cane beads
Known as "Chacha Sō" in Africa, Millefiori is Italian for "a thousand flowers." Following the collapse of exclusive trade with the East and the rise of Bohemian glass dominance in the European market, Venice sought to regain its standing by producing these richly decorated glass pieces. Millefiori glass became a hallmark of this effort. Traders who were already engaged in bead trade with Africa created cylindrical beads from this glass, which were then transported to Africa as trade beads.
