About Millefiori:
Era: Late 1800s to early 1900s
Origin: Venice
Technique: Mosaic application or mosaic folding method
In Africa, these beads are known as "Chachaso." The term "Millefiori" is Italian for "a thousand flowers." As Venice faced economic challenges due to the collapse of exclusive trade with the East and the dominance of Bohemian glass in the European market, Venetian artisans created Millefiori glass as a countermeasure. These richly colored and decorative glass beads became highly sought after in African bead trade, where merchants crafted cylindrical Millefiori beads and transported them as trade beads to Africa.
