About Millefiori:
Era: Late 1800s to early 1900s
Origin: Venice
Technique: Mosaic application or mosaic folding method. In Africa, these beads are known as Chachaso. The term "Millefiori" means 'a thousand flowers' in Italian. Following the collapse of exclusive trade with the East and the dominance of Bohemian glass in the European market, Venice sought to revitalize its trade economy by producing these decorative glass beads. Millefiori glass beads became a hallmark of Venetian craftsmanship and were traded extensively with Africa, where they were transformed into cylindrical trade beads by local merchants.
