In Africa, these beads are known as "Chachaso." The term "Millefiori" is Italian for "a thousand flowers." Following the collapse of exclusive trade with the Orient and the dominance of Bohemian glass in the European market, Venice sought to revitalize its economy by producing colorful decorative glass. Millefiori glass emerged as a hallmark of this revival. Traders, already engaged in bead trade with Africa, transformed this glass into cylindrical beads known as "trade beads," which were then transported to Africa.
