In Africa, these beads are known as "Chachaso." The term "Millefiori" is Italian for "a thousand flowers." After the collapse of exclusive trade with the Orient and the dominance of Bohemian glass in the European market, Venice faced significant economic challenges. As a countermeasure, Venetian artisans created colorful decorative glass, with Millefiori glass being a prime example. Traders, already engaged in bead trade with Africa, crafted cylindrical glass beads from Millefiori glass and transported them to Africa as trade beads.
