In Africa, these beads are known as "Chachaso." The term "Millefiori" is Italian for "a thousand flowers." Following the collapse of exclusive trade with the East and the rise of Bohemian glass dominating European markets, Venice sought to counteract economic impacts by producing vividly colored decorative glass. Millefiori glass became a hallmark of these efforts. Traders who were already engaged in bead trade with Africa transformed this glass into tubular trade beads, which were then transported to Africa as valuable trade items.
