In Africa, these beads are known as Chachaso. Millefiori, meaning "a thousand flowers" in Italian, was created as a response by Venetian glassmakers to the economic impact caused by the collapse of exclusive trade with the East and the dominance of Bohemian glass in the European market. Venetian traders, who were already engaged in bead trade with Africa, crafted these colorful glass beads into tubular shapes and transported them to Africa as trade beads.
