About Roman Beads:
Era: 100 BCE to 300 CE
Origin: Alexandria (modern-day Egypt) and coastal regions of Syria, among others
From the 1st century BCE to the 4th century CE, glass craftsmanship flourished in the Roman Empire, leading to the production and export of numerous glass items. These glass products, made along the Mediterranean coast, were traded extensively, reaching regions as far as Northern Europe and Japan.
Initially, most glass items were opaque, but transparent glass became highly popular and widespread after the 1st century. Beads crafted as jewelry held high value, while glass fragments from cups or pitchers with drilled holes are more commonly found and can be relatively affordable even today.
