About Millefiori:
Era: Late 1800s to early 1900s
Origin: Venice
Technique: Mosaic application or mosaic folding method
Known as "Chachaso" in Africa, Millefiori means "a thousand flowers" in Italian. This technique was developed by Venetian artisans as a response to the collapse of their exclusive trade with the East and the domination of the European market by Bohemian glass. They created these richly colored decorative glass pieces, which became known as Millefiori glass. Traders, who were already engaged in bead trade with Africa, crafted cylindrical glass beads from these pieces and transported them to Africa as trade beads.
