In Africa, Millefiori beads are known as "Chachaso." The term "Millefiori" is Italian for "a thousand flowers." After the collapse of exclusive trade with the East, Bohemian glass dominated the European market, dealing a significant blow to Venice's trade economy. In response, Venice created decorative glass with a variety of colors, with Millefiori glass being a prime example. Merchants who were already trading beads with Africa crafted cylindrical beads from this glass and transported them to Africa as trade beads.
