In Africa, this type of bead is known as Chachasso. The term Millefiori means "a thousand flowers" in Italian. Following the collapse of exclusive trade with the East and the dominance of Bohemian glass in the European market, Venice created Millefiori glass as a countermeasure, characterized by its colorful decorative patterns. Merchants who were already engaged in bead trade with Africa crafted cylindrical glass beads from this glass and transported them as trade beads to Africa.
