Millefiori, meaning "a thousand flowers" in Italian, refers to a type of decorative glass made by fusing together multiple glass rods. In Africa, these beads are known as "Chachaso." Venice developed Millefiori glass as part of an effort to counteract the economic impact of losing their monopoly on trade with the East and the dominance of Bohemian glass in European markets. Venetian merchants, who were already engaged in bead trading with Africa, created cylindrical Millefiori beads, which were then traded in Africa as trade beads.
