About Millefiori:
Era: Late 1800s to early 1900s
Origin: Venice
Technique: Mosaic application method or mosaic folding beads
In Africa, these beads are known as Chachaso. "Millefiori" is an Italian term meaning "a thousand flowers." Following the collapse of exclusive trade with the East and the dominance of Bohemian glass in European markets, Venice faced significant economic challenges. In response, Venetian artisans created Millefiori glass, characterized by its colorful and decorative patterns. These glass beads were then crafted into cylindrical trade beads by merchants who already engaged in trade with Africa, where they were highly valued.
