In Africa, these beads are known as "Chachasso." The term "Millefiori" means "a thousand flowers" in Italian. After the collapse of exclusive trade with the East, and with Bohemian glass dominating the European market, Venice faced significant economic challenges. To counter this, Venetian artisans created Millefiori glass, a type of decorative glass featuring a myriad of colors. Traders who were already engaged in bead trade with Africa produced tube-shaped beads from this glass and transported them to Africa as trade beads.
