About Dzi Beads (Chong Dzi Beads):

Dzi beads are ancient beads from Tibet, similar to etched carnelian, where natural dyes are baked onto agate to create intricate designs. These beads are believed to have been made between the 1st to 6th centuries AD. The exact composition of the dyes used in the baking process remains a mystery, adding to their enigmatic allure. While primarily found in Tibet, they are also discovered in Bhutan and regions of the Himalayas such as Ladakh. The different baked designs are thought to carry various meanings, with the round "eye" motifs being particularly prized. In Tibet, these beads are considered talismans of wealth and prosperity, passed down through generations and highly valued as ornamental items. Recently, their popularity has surged in China, where they are known as "Tian Zhu" (天珠), leading to the production of numerous replicas using similar techniques. However, authentic ancient Dzi beads remain exceedingly rare and valuable.
