About Trade Beads:

Trade beads were highly treasured by African kings and nobles during the era of the African slave trade. Produced extensively in Venice and the Czech Republic (Bohemian glass), these beads were traded globally for slaves, gold, ivory, and more. The production techniques for these lucrative glass beads were so secretive that craftsmen were prohibited from leaving their workshops. Unlike those made for Europe, these beads were meticulously crafted to suit the tastes of various tribes, resulting in a wide array of designs including large and small beads, patterned and plain.
