About MALAIKA:
The name "MALAIKA" means "angel" in Swahili. The brand cherishes and shares the warmth of craftsmanship from Asia, Africa, South America, and beyond. Since its inception, MALAIKA has focused on preserving the rich traditions of handwork, from block printing and embroidery to weaving and natural dyeing. The brand celebrates the beauty of global cultures and the skills of artisans through its dedication to traditional techniques and natural materials.
About Kalamkari Print:
Kalamkari, which combines the words for "pen" and "craft," is a traditional Indian method of using a bamboo stick as a pen to apply colors. Initially hand-drawn, the technique evolved to include woodblock printing, with the floral patterns eventually becoming synonymous with Kalamkari itself. Utilizing natural dyes for printing, each motif is hand-pressed using wooden blocks. The coloring process involves using charcoal, alum, flowers, indigo, madder, turmeric, and more, resulting in hues that deepen with use. The technique is renowned for its muted colors, achieved through the power of nature and traditional craftsmanship.
